The “Pillboxes” Hike & A Meeting With President Obama

Day after Christmas..figured another hike was in order since we all had the day off. Love hiking up to the Lanikai Pillboxes and Ellen has never been up there. So we headed up in the early morning.
Headed up to the Pillboxes
Hiked up rather quickly this time (thanks Yoga!!) Super windy day..major gusts of wind felt like we would be blown off the mountain.
Made it to the Pillbox and sat down to watch the beauty before us...my absolute favorite spot on earth ...Kailua/Lanikai

Rudy checking out the views

After hanging up on the top for awhile we decided to head back down.

Once we were close to the bottom and the trail got real steep and narrow we saw 2 guys standing there looking at us. They stopped us and said “you will need to stand here and wait....we have a large group that needs to pass”...Ok, I thought...strange, but no big deal. I thought...why would some tourist group stop us from decending?
I started to notice strange things like how they were dressed the same (khaki pants, and button down shirts ) weird for a hike up here! Then I noticed more of them....all dressed the same...huh? …they continued to make us sit there and not move which by now was kinda irritating. I only saw a few people pass us not some large group! Why cant we go down there? I made a joke and said...what are you guys the Secret Service or something? Haha....Ellen followed by saying....is it someone important?? We got a good laugh at this later

Then I noticed the pins on all the shirts...metal detector wands and ear pieces, LOL...wow, think this IS the Secret Service. Duh....Rudy knew all along of coarse, Ellen and I were in our own world and not really paying attention to them. Once I realized who would be walking by us shortly I grabbed my camera. He looked at me and said...sorry no photos.....WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you kidding me right now?? I could not even believe what I was hearing. How can you possibly tell a photographer not to photograph something like this? Seriously?? I even said...please, I dont think the president would mind! He looked at me and said...”Please dont do that “ in a stern and pleading voice.
Right after that I saw his daughters go by and shortly after was President Obama himself...right in front of us waving at Rudy, Ellen and Myself....saying Hello and Merry Christmas...asked how we liked the hike etc...all I could think of was how horrendous this was for me not to get a damn photo. LOL..oh well

NOT my photo! Took off the evening news...hmm...they were allowed to take his photo :p

Wether you like Obama or not, its still pretty cool to experience seeing the man that runs our country just hike on by you on a trail in our little town!

When we were allowed to go back down, we were greeted with about 10 cars full of Secret Service and a line of people who were trying to hike up the mountain and were being stopped by them to check bags, ID's etc...we apparantly made it just in time!

Walked thru the crazy group of Secret Service to get to our car and saw the big red X on our Jeep....guess they checked our Jeep too, LOL...cleared by the Secret Service
The Secret Service gang that greeted at the end of the trail
Cleared by the Secret Service...guess the Jeep passed haha

Christmas Eve....Hawaiian Style!

Hiking Diamond Head! What a great way to spend Christmas Eve with the family. We may not have snow, but we have Extinct Volcanoes!

View of Diamond Head Crater... taken a few months ago from the top of Tantalus

This Crater was formed aprox. 3000,000 years ago during a single brief eruption! The broad crater covers 350 acres.
Many, many, many years later, the trail to the summit was built in 1908 as a part of the US Army Coastal Artillery Defense system. The trailhead with numerous switchbacks was designed  for mule and foot traffic.
The bunkers along the crater rim were built in 1915

Ok, history class over ;)

Christmas Eve, we decided to hike up to the top of the crater
Rudy & Brooke at the beginning of the trail
2nd set of stairs you hit on the trail..this one was 99 steps...thats nothing after  hiking
KOKO HEAD, lol...so Rudy
decided to run up.
We have arrived!
Wow!! We were up top for a bit when suddenly the most amazing double rainbow
appeared! It kept getting stronger and stronger. I have seen many rainbows, but this tops my list!
End of the rainbow
Got a tourist to take our pic :)
Under the rainbow!
The Mauka side of the lookout is amazing as well!
We ended our day at Haleiwa Joe's
Talk about relaxing! Yes this is the view from the restaurant!
Love my family

Here is a video I took of the rainbow for all you non believers! lol

Pipe Masters Baby!!

Finally after many years I made it to the Pipe Masters Contest! Last time I made it to this event was when Brooke was a baby! Back then (1997, we watched a then very young Kelly Slater!)...Now today here to watch that same man who is now the 11 time ASP world Surfing champion! Also was excited to see our young local boy John John Florence.

Arrived just in time to see Kelly Slater's Heat WITH John John...how perfect....

Loved this shot of Kelly Slater in the tube
This was John John Florence's Perfect 10 wave! Was awesome to see in person!
Kelly Slater doing what he does best
Beach was packed
Shane Dorian on a Monster Wave!
Evan Valiere paddling out for his heat
Kalani Chapman , loved this shot of him
Just me
They were saying this was some of the best surf they have ever seen for Pipe! It was amazing!
Cant forget Andy Irons....this event was in honor of him

The Eddie Opening Ceremony 2011

Dec 1st was the day we have all been waiting for...the Opening Ceremony for the Eddie Aikau!

I look forward to this event every year, its amazing to see a large group of such talented surfers from all over the world get together. You can feel the energy in the air...the excitement, the respect for the Aikau family and  even the melancholy when remembering surfers who are no longer with us.

Taken during the  blessing
The ceremony is definitely something you should see if you appreciate the sport of Surfing. What other sport can you witness such an event in public with the roaring surf behind you and be in such close proximity to the athletes? Photographers dream  :)

Photo session!

Always seem to be behind Sunny Garcia every year :)
Kelly Slater & Grant McNamara
After the ceremony, the surfers go out to the water for another blessing, this is Makua Rothman
Sunny Garcia & Jeremy Flores (2010 Pipe Master Winner)
My fave pic of the day....Kelly Slater...love the look he has while touching his board,....
MY PRECIOUS...haha
Headed out to make the circle
The circle of love ;)
After the ceremony on the water, they couldnt resist catching some waves with the great surf we had !

Perfect ending to a great day....lucky to have some 15 foot surf too!
