Conquering Koko Head

Ahhh, the feeling of acomplishment. Today I finally decided to climb Koko Head Crater .....a mountain that I drive by frequently and always think NO WAY.....but secretly I have been wanting to climb it and conquer it! Today was the day.....
Koko Head looms in the distance as I drive past it
 Some info about this crater.......
Koko Crater is a cinder cone remaining from the last active volcano that occurred on O'ahu approximately 10,000 years ago. This crater is the tallest tuff ring in Hawaii, measuring 1,207 feet in height. The slopes of the crater drop steeply into the Molokai Channel, an area which lacks protection from any offshore reefs, causing very turbulent seas in this area.
The trail up the face of Koko Head Crater was originally used in World War II to transport military supplies up the mountain using a cable car. The railroad track is now as dormant as the crater itself, but hikers of varying fitness levels enjoy the challenge of walking up the 1,048 stairs that are the haphazard remains of the railroad.

The beginning....the "stairs" are actually an old railroad track....halfway up the groud drops out from under and there is a railroad bridge to cross

Ok...so this is the "bridge" where the ground drops off from under you and you have to walk across.
FYI... I am deathly afraid of heights and everytime I read about this hike online, so many people said they either crawled or went on the dirt path to the right.
I was amazed because this was NOT bad at all...kinda confused as to what all the fuss was about?? And thats coming from someone who is DEALTHY afraid of heights. ...weird, just wanted to share :)
Me Huffing & Puffing  and almost at the top!

Finally at the Top!

Rudy & Brooke at the top..they actually RAN up to race eachother on the very last part of hike...she gets that from her Daddy, LOL

The long walk up the crater was well worth it, the view we received at the top was Amazing!!
Enjoying the view!

Once you get to the top, you can also walk around to the other side and hike the ridgeline...we decided to try it out!
